Seven steps to God

James 4:8

Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh unto you.

Main points

  • Salvation is meaningless to the individual unless he/she personally receives it

  • God expects us to stretch our hands of faith to Him.

  • Salvation gets us to God. We must continue to dwell in Him.

Salvation involves a process leading to an event. There are several steps in the process leading to the event of salvation. Paul taught that salvation was a process (sowing, watering etc) leading to an event (reaping) (1 Cor 3:6-9). To be saved a person needs to believe and be committed to the following facts:

  1. There is a God (Gen 1:1, Psalm 19:1, Romans 1:20)

  2. I am responsible to God (Romans 14:12, Hebrews 9:27)

  3. I have failed my responsibility. I have not lived up to God’s standard. I have broken God’s laws. I have sinned (Exodus 20:3-17, Matthew 22:36-40, Romans 3:10, 19, 23, 1 John 1:8)

  4. My sin has alienated me or separated me from my God (Isaiah 59:2, Romans 6:23)

    Sin=death/separation

Physical death: separation of the soul from the body

Spiritual death: separation of the soul from God

Eternal death: separation of the soul from God forever

  5. Jesus never sinned (1 John 3:5, Hebrews 4:15, Romans 5:19). Jesus – sin = life/union

  6. I can only be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23, 2 Cor 5:21, 1 Peter 3:19, Matt 27:35, 45-46)

  7. I am willing to admit my need (Luke 18:9-14),

Believe completely in Christ (John 3:16),

Call upon Him to take control of my life and save me (Romans 10:13)

EIGHT STEPS WITH GOD

Except for the first step (baptism), these are ongoing activities for a healthy Christian.

  1. Baptism - Acts 2:41

  2. Bible intake - Acts 2:42

  3. Fellowship - Acts 2:42, 46

  4. The Lord’s Table - Acts 2:42

  5. Prayer - Acts 2:42

  6. Generosity - Acts 2:44-45

  7. Praising God - Acts 2:47

  8. Relationship evangelism - Acts 2:46-47

These steps are a taste of what is ahead for a healthy Christian. Getting saved is not the end; rather it is in many ways just the beginning of an exciting walk with Jesus.
